PORT CHARLES EPISODE SUMMARIES: AUGUST 1997

Friday, August 1, 1997 (Episode #45)
Jake looks forward to introducing the woman he loves to his family back in New Jersey. Rex, however, orders Danielle to
cancel her travel plans or risk having the most sordid details of her life exposed to her ever lovin' fiance. Kevin thanks Serena
for being so nice to Lucy and helping to cheer her up during their time of trouble. Gail stops by the lighthouse to express her
condolences to Kevin, then offers to take Serena to the zoo for the day. Later, Kevin sadly confides to Mac how difficult it's
been to accept his loss. Scotty pops up in the on call room at GH to thank Eve again for taking care of Serena during their trip
to the emergency room with Lucy. Recalling the bruise she saw on the child's arm, Eve tells her startled visitor how it appears
that someone recently drew blood from his young daughter. Horrified at the thought that Serena's kidnappers may have injected her with drugs, a panicking Scotty asks Eve to come back to the lighthouse to examine the girl. Danielle visits Dominique's
grave and wishes aloud that she and her half-sister could have known one another. Tearfully expressing regret that she ever
threw in with Rex, Danielle apologizes for scaring Serena and vows not to let her nefarious uncle carry out the rest of his evil
plan.

Monday, August 4, 1997 (Episode #46)
Joe daydreams about making Karen his own. Meanwhile, Karen makes plans to fly to San Francisco to see Jagger. Serena
resists her father's efforts to check out the bruise on her arm. Rex shows slides of Port Charles' leading citizens to Jason's
former babysitter, then listens with interest as the woman relates a tale about Scott's unsavory past. After finally persuading his
daughter to show him her arm, Scotty fears that Serena's kidnappers did indeed use a syringe on her before she was rescued.
Kneeling by Dominique's grave, Danielle vows to foil Rex's plot by leaving town. When Lucy appears, Danielle offers her
sympathies on the miscarriage. Joe berates Karen for giving her undeserving husband endless opportunities to treat her like a
doormat. Hoping that Danielle will bond with her niece, Lucy encourages the young woman to reveal her true identity to Scott
and ask for permission to meet Serena. Eve tries to help Scott worm the truth out of Serena but the child clams up about how
her arm got bruised. Later, Eve advises the worried father to stop obsessing over his problem. Rex thanks Bess for her
assistance but asks her not to mention their conversation to anyone.

Tuesday, August 5, 1997 (Episode #47)
Julie accepts a "casual" dinner invitation from Chris but is taken aback to find a sumptuous feast awaiting her in her fellow
intern's apartment. Smelling a set-up, Julie wonders aloud why she's being given the royal treatment and is startled when Chris
announces that he knows all about her background. Lucy introduces Scott to Danielle, then hesitantly reveals that their visitor is
actually Dominique's half-sister. Recalling how he met the actress at General Hospital, Scotty expresses doubts about the young woman's claims of kinship to his late wife. Lucy persists, however, with the impromptu family reunion and urges Scott to be a
bit more open-minded about the possibility that his world is about to expand. At the hospital, a starry-eyed Jake tells Kevin
how he fell in love with Danielle the first time he laid eyes on her. Chris promises a skeptical Julie that he won't use his inside
information against her. Returning to the lighthouse, Kevin discovers what a small world Port Charles truly is when Lucy
explains that Jake's fiancee is their houseguest's sister-in-law. Later, Scotty privately admits to Kevin how he believes the timing of Danielle's arrival in town is a trifle fishy. Meanwhile, Danielle pens a note of farewell to Jake.

Wednesday, August 6, 1997 (Episode #48)
Unnerved by Chris' come-on, Julie reminds her host that they are just friends. Scotty tells Kevin he thinks Danielle may be
taking advantage of Lucy's gullible nature. Jake returns home ahead of schedule and is enraged to find Danielle finishing up yet
another letter of farewell. Insisting there is no longer a reason for her to remain in Port Charles, the actress claims she wants to
go back to New York to resume her career. Brandishing the engagement ring he gave her as a token of eternal love, Jake
demands that Danielle reveal the real reason she's running away from him. After Scotty discloses his latest concern about his
daughter, Kevin explains that Serena may not remember how she got the bruise if the incident was too traumatic for her to
process. Chris apologizes to Julie for getting carried away, then feigns sympathy when she complains about the anonymous
creep who sent Frank a clipping from the society page of her hometown paper. Meanwhile, Frank sheepishly admits to Grace
that he fears he may have blown his chance with Julie by being too stubborn and inflexible. The sympathetic nurse urges Frank
to keep pitching but suggests that he next approach Julie in a sincere spirit of compromise. Later, however, a few words from
Chris about Julie's brother cools Frank's ardor once again. A trembling Danielle warns Jake that Rex will ruin them both if she
stays in town.

Thursday, August 7, 1997 (Episode #49)
At the hospital, Grace teases Joe about his obvious crush on Karen. Kevin admits to Scott that he's had some concerns about
Serena since the kidnapping. Rex barges in on Jake and Danielle and suggests to the young couple that the time has come for
some truth telling. Explaining to the baffled intern that Danielle's real name is Stanton, Rex goes on to describe how they pulled
off the abduction of Serena. As Jake goggles in disbelief, Rex next reveals that he arranged for the "accidental" meeting on the
boardwalk which eventually led to romance for the doctor and the actress. Though Lucy wonders why Scotty seems so fidgety, Kevin assures her that nothing is wrong. Later, Lucy tearfully confides to Kevin how she can't stop blaming herself for the
miscarriage. When he tries to convince her she did nothing wrong, Lucy blurts out that she deliberately got pregnant and then
lied to him about how it happened. Grace encourages Joe to start a social life but is disappointed when he decides to take her
advice by calling another woman for a date. Tired of Jake's sputtering attempts to deny the truth, Rex puts a choke hold on the
young man and hisses out a warning. Afterwards, Rex reminds Jake that from now on they are partners in crime.

Friday, August 8, 1997 (Episode #50)
Hoping to exonerate Ellen, Matt continues to speculate about how Greg might have suffered the second seizure. Scotty presses Kevin to admit that he doesn't believe the kidnappers are done with Serena. Meanwhile, Lucy slips into Serena's room and sits
by the bed to watch the child sleep peacefully. In the wake of Rex's traumatic visit, Danielle asks Jake to call the police and
turn her in. Kevin tries to dissuade Scotty when the attorney bitterly contemplates running away again to Canada with his small
daughter in tow. Ellen advises Matt to concentrate on fighting his own uphill battles instead of meddling in hers. In San
Francisco, Karen returns to the apartment she shared with Jagger. Matt fills Ellen in on his theory about Greg deliberately
causing the seizure at General Hospital by injecting himself with insulin. The chief resident continues to refuse Matt's help,
however, and icily orders the intern to butt out of her life. Concerned about causing Lucy any additional stress, Kevin asks
Scotty not to reveal the doubts he's harboring about Dominique's newest half-sister. Danielle tearfully explains to Jake how Rex suckered her into joining his scheme to get their fair share of the Stanton family fortune. Waiting for her husband to return home, Karen is unpleasantly surprised when a woman arrives instead. Scotty sets up a meeting with Rex.

Monday, August 11, 1997 (Episode #51)
A fuming Karen questions her uninvited guest about the lingerie she found in Jagger's bedroom. Kevin asks Serena to draw a
picture of the lady who took her away from her daddy. Meanwhile, Scott introduces himself to his new "uncle", who claims he
didn't come forward sooner because he didn't wish to interfere in the attorney's life. Explaining how Avery banished him from
the Stanton homestead years ago, Rex balks when Scotty suggests that he meet Dominique's daughter. Kevin tries to get
Serena talking about how she felt when she was abducted, but the girl clams up again when pushed to describe her kidnappers. Sensing that Danielle is tense, Lucy theorizes that the young woman simply needs a creative outlet and promptly offers to find
her a job at Jax Cosmetics. Jake concocts an excuse to explain to his family why they won't be meeting Danielle any time soon. Karen accuses her former friend of sleeping with Jagger, then is staggered to learn that the affair began way back when she was in med school. Rex orders Danielle to accept whatever position Lucy gives her at the cosmetics firm. Chortling about the dim
bulbs he's encountered since landing in Port Charles, Rex assures his unhappy accomplice that retrieving the Stanton family
fortune will be as easy as taking candy from a baby. After secretly trailing Rex back to Danielle's place, Scotty tells Kevin he's
certain Dominique's longlost relatives are a pair of grifters who have been conspiring against him.

Tuesday, August 12, 1997 (Episode #52)
Pacing the floor of the apartment she shared with Jagger, Karen mulls over the facts of her husband's infidelity and recalls the
sage words of advice her father gave her before she left Port Charles. Matt tells Ellen he had a strange phone call from Greg
Cooper's attorney. At the Recovery Room, Mike confides to Mary how he hopes no news will prove to be good news where
Sonny is concerned. Meanwhile, Frank scowls to see Julie enter the bar with Chris. Ellen cautions Matt again not to risk
damaging his fledgling career in a futile attempt to help her out of a bind. Chris admits to Julie how he let it slip to Frank about
her brother's suicide. In San Francisco, the chief of detectives apologetically informs Karen that Jagger cannot contact her until
his current assignment ends. When she insists on speaking to her husband right away, the detective explains that Jagger may be
incommunicado for months and advises the doctor to go home. Grace tries again to make Joe see her as a potential love
interest instead of just a friendly co-worker. Matt suggests to an astonished Ellen that Greg conspired with his lawyer to drug
himself into a seizure. Julie confronts Frank and demands to know if he intends to continue giving her the cold shoulder.

Wednesday, August 13, 1997 (Episode #53)
Unwilling to let anyone know she's returned early to Port Charles, Karen spends the evening pigging out on junk food and late
night TV. In the morning, she rehearses what she's going to say to her coworkers about her disastrous trip to San Francisco.
Frank bitterly reminds Julie that all the lies she concocted about her bogus family make him suspect she could be deceiving him
about everything else as well. Insisting that she hated lying to him, Julie explains again how she simply wanted to make a name for herself instead of carrying baggage based on the lives of her prestigious parents. Joe bristles when a new bartender at the Recovery Room makes a snide comment about Karen's former career as a stripper. Gail lets herself into her granddaughter's apartment and is surprised to find a depressed Karen hiding from the world. Describing her encounter with Jagger's mistress, Karen begs Gail not to tell anyone else about the crumbling state of her marriage until she's had a chance to speak with her husband. Joe confides to Mike how much he regrets adding unnecessary stress to Karen's already complicated life.

Thursday, August 14, 1997 (Episode #54)
Jake finds it nearly impossible to concentrate on his work at General Hospital as he mulls over the ever present threat to
Danielle. Meanwhile, Lucy drops in on Danielle and finds her opening a gift from her future in- laws. At the lighthouse, Serena is thrilled to discover that her father had her favorite dollhouse sent down from their place in Canada. Scotty shows Kevin a copy
of Dominique's will which leaves a cool one hundred million dollars to her husband and daughter. Explaining how at least a
dozen greedy relatives came crawling out of the woodwork following his wife's death, Scotty discloses to Kevin that he's set up a trust to ensure that Serena's inheritance will remain safe and secure from fortune hunters. A tearful Danielle confides to Lucy
that she feels terribly lost and confused. Grace urges Jake to go home and get some rest before he makes a mistake with one of his patients. Karen returns to work and assures Joe that her trip to San Francisco cleared up a lot of questions about the state
of her marital union. Kevin cautions Scotty not to let Lucy know that they suspect Danielle of being in league with Serena's
kidnappers.

Friday, August 15, 1997 (Episode #55)
Karen continues to give her friends and coworkers cryptic answers when they ask how her trip to California worked out. Mike celebrates his son's homecoming by passing out free drinks at the Recovery Room. A hopeful Frank tells Joe he thinks he may
have finally cleared the air with Julie. Danielle calls the bar in search of her missing fiance and is troubled to learn from Mike that Jake has been drinking heavily for several hours. When Lucy wonders why her lover and her houseguest always seem to have
their heads together in whispered conversation, Kevin and Scotty admit they've been having some qualms about Dominique's
longlost relatives suddenly appearing in town. Frank's spirits droop after Julie arrives at the Recovery Room with Chris. Ellen
gives Karen a word to the wise upon noting how listless and remote the intern seems since her return from San Francisco.
Kevin discloses to an appalled Lucy that he believes Rex and Danielle may have been involved in Serena's kidnapping. Joe tries to cheer up his brother, reminding Frank that at least he isn't hung up on a happily married woman. Later, Julie and Frank make up and apologize to one another for their quarrel. Ellen fears her career may be over when Lee hints that someone will have to
be the sacrificial lamb in the settlement between the hospital and Cooper's lawyer. Rex pays a visit to the lighthouse.

Monday, August 18, 1997 (Episode #56)
At the Recovery Room, Mary beams to see her son making up with Julie. Meanwhile, buoyed by a series of martinis, Julie
suggests to Frank that they take this opportunity to get to know one another better. An enraged Jake orders Danielle to pack
her bags and move out. Rex drops by the lighthouse and thanks Lucy for helping out his niece by giving her a job with the
cosmetics firm. Irked when Frank suggests that she's had too much to drink, Julie decides to stay on at the bar and show
everyone she can hold her liquor. Later, Chris takes advantage of Julie's tipsy state and persuades her to let him see her home.
With Lucy and Scotty looking on, Kevin attempts to draw Rex out about his relationship with Danielle. Awakened by the
sound of voices in the living room, Serena wanders out of her bedroom and stares wide- eyed at her father's guest. Scoffing at
Danielle's declaration of love, Jake furiously reminds her that everything she's told him since day one has proven to be a lie.
Lucy's extra sensory perception kicks in and sounds the alarm after a casual gesture from Rex causes her to flash on an
unpleasant memory of the day in the lab. Jake vows retribution upon learning that Rex is threatening to have his parents
deported as illegal aliens.

Tuesday, August 19, 1997 (Episode #57)
Lee regretfully informs Ellen that Cooper's lawsuit is headed to court unless they receive an admission of guilt from her. Frank
expresses to Joe his earnest desire to wipe the smile off Chris' smug face. As the rest of the interns nervously prepare for their
first day on surgical rotation, Eve is pleased to find her roommate still sleeping off her big night at the Recovery Room. Lee
reviews for Ellen her limited options for fighting the malpractice suit. Speaking off the record, the attorney advises Ellen to hire
her own lawyer to protect her interests because the hospital cannot afford to back her up. Joking about the coveted
Quartermaine scholarship awarded to the top surgical resident, Matt warns his able bodied fellow interns he's ready to roll right over them if necessary on his way to the top of the heap. Frank shakes Julie awake and forces his hungover friend into a cold
shower to get her going. Ellen thanks Matt for his continuing support as her legal problems escalate. Scotty offers Eve a ride to
work but she panics when mechanical difficulties strand them on the side of the road. Passion blooms for Julie and Frank. After enduring sarcastic comments from coworkers and learning that her patients have lost confidence in her skills, Ellen finally
decides the time has come to fight back.

Wednesday, August 20, 1997 (Episode #58)
Determined not to miss the first day of her surgical rotation, Eve sticks out her thumb and attempts to hitch a ride into town
while Scotty tinkers with his stalled car. Frank reluctantly pulls away from Julie's embrace, reminding her that they must avoid
temptation if she's going to make it to GH in time for surgical rounds. Scotty finally gets the engine running and heads out once
more with Eve in tow. Meanwhile, at the hospital, Dr. Boardman warns the interns that all of them will suffer the consequences
if their missing coworkers don't show up soon. Matt relentlessly nags Ellen to find an attorney and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Greg Cooper caused his own seizure. Later, recalling one of her last conversations with David, Ellen remembers
how her late friend encouraged her to believe in her own ability no matter what obstacles appeared in her path. Frank uses the
siren on his ambulance to run a grateful Julie through traffic just in the nick of time. Arriving at the very start of rounds, Julie and
Eve both receive reprimands from a disapproving Dr. Boardman. Ellen asks Scotty if he would represent her in the malpractice
suit.

Thursday, August 21, 1997 (Episode #59)
Chris congratulates Julie on the way she managed to impress the senior surgical resident despite the fact that she was suffering
from a killer hangover. Jake tries to find legal help for his parents' immigration problem. As Danielle reports for her first day of
work at Jax Cosmetics, Lucy tells Kevin she believes her new employee is struggling to get out from under Rex's thumb. After
Lucy catches Danielle going through her desk, the young woman hesitantly reveals that she was only trying to put away a baby
book before the sight of it brought back some bad memories for her boss. Audrey offers Ellen her sympathy and asks if she
can do anything to alleviate the problems the doctor has been having. Kevin finds Jake leafing through his father's medical chart. Explaining how he's taken an interest in the case, Jake tells Kevin his theory that the senior Collins may be suffering from a
disease caused by a genetic defect. Lucy apologizes for treating Danielle like a criminal and promises not to jump to
conclusions the next time around. Touched by Audrey's kind words, Ellen decides to swallow her pride and ask for help. Chris
is discouraged to see Julie and Frank move even closer together. Rex warns Jake that his mother and father will face
deportation unless he plays along and follows orders to the letter.

Friday, August 22, 1997 (Episode #60)
Frank coaxes his mother into supervising a party for the rambunctious members of his Little League team. Karen and Joe bump into one another just as he leaves the shower room and she starts to head in. Following some awkward apologies for intruding
on his privacy, a blushing Karen makes small talk about a recent experience in the O.R. while Joe hastily slips into his clothes.
Later, Karen forces a smile when she discovers that Joe and Grace are going together to watch Frank's team play in the
championship game. Jake reports to Kevin that he hasn't observed any change in Victor's condition since they began the new
protocol. Meanwhile, Lucy wonders why Jake seemed so surprised to learn that Danielle is working for her at Jax Cosmetics.
Rex warns Jake never to underestimate his power if he wants to ensure that the elder Marshaks stay in this country and out of
federal prison. Julie promises a pleased Frank that she'll be in the bleachers to cheer on him and his boys. Karen explains to
Gail why she feels she must keep silent about her spiraling marital difficulties. Kevin finally tells his ailing father about Lucy's
miscarriage. As she prepares to leave for the baseball game, Julie is startled to find her father at the door. Lucy encourages
an obviously troubled Jake to accept a little help from his friends.

Monday, August 24, 1997 (Episode #61)
Eve smells a rat when Chris claims he could care less about Julie's budding romance with Frank. Dr. Devlin explains to his
irked daughter that he came to Port Charles because her mother is worried about the strain her double life is putting on her
work. To Kevin's amazement, Victor begins speaking coherently and expresses his deep sympathy for the child his son just
lost. Lucy urges Jake to remember he can trust her and confide in her any time he feels the need to unburden himself. Later,
Danielle shows Jake evidence of Rex's most recent threat and warns him not to breathe a word of their problem to any
outsider. Delighted to discover that his father has understood every word of their conversation, Kevin urges Victor to stay
focused but the elder Dr. Collins slips back into his catatonic state. Afterwards, Kevin happily describes for Lucy how he and
his dad connected for a brief but shining moment. Chris boasts to Eve about the next move in his scheme to impress Dr.
Boardman. Julie reminds her father of his promise not to interfere during her first year of internship at the hospital. Appalled to
learn that Julie is living in a basement apartment, Dr. Devlin again tries to convince his daughter to accept some financial help as
well as a professional boost for her status in the medical community. Eve returns home and is shocked to recognize her
roommate's guest.

Tuesday, August 26, 1997 (Episode #62)
Gale drops by the on-call room to see if Karen has heard anything from her absentee husband. Though disappointed to hear
that Jagger still has not checked in, Gale is relieved when Karen declares that she won't be pursuing her interest in Joe. As his
team warms up for their championship game, Frank waits at the Recovery Room for Julie to show up. Meanwhile, at the
Scanlon house, Julie introduces her father to an obviously shaken Eve. Explaining that she didn't want to cash in on her famous
father's reputation as a surgeon, Julie apologizes to her roommate for hiding her true identity by taking another name. Joe
regretfully tells Frank that he's getting clear signal from Karen to back off and let her reconcile with her husband. Karen relates
for Gale how hard she tried to convince her husband to either give up police work altogether or accept a less dangerous
assignment. After recovering from the shock of finding Bennett Devlin inside her apartment, Eve reverts to her usual sarcastic
self in time to throw a few pointed barbs at Julie and her guest. Karen confides to Gale that she's crazy about Joe but
determined not to take advantage of him until she's tried to work things out with Jagger. After Julie departs, a sneering Eve asks Bennett if he intends to keep up the pretense that they've just met. When the same surgeon warns her not to be difficult, Eve
threatens to let Julie know that her roommate is her precious dad's ex- mistress.

Wednesday, August 27, 1997 (Episode #63)
Matt tells a skeptical Scotty his theory that Greg Cooper's first seizure was faked and the second was self-induced. When the
attorney asks for proof, Matt admits he has no concrete evidence but insists that an accomplice must have smuggled in drugs to help Greg accomplish his devious mission. Frank deals with an over-aggressive Little League father when the man demands that his son be allowed to play for the entire game. Eve reminds Bennett that she paid him back for every article of clothing or
trinket of jewelry he ever gave her. When the surgeon warns his bitter former mistress not to take out her anger on Julie, Eve
counters with another threat to spill the beans to her roommate unless he keeps his distance. Scotty explains to Ellen why
Cooper's family is pressing so hard to force her into an admission of guilt. Julie looks on approvingly as Frank encourages a
dejected Ernie to believe he can contribute to his team's victory. Later, Ernie's heroics in right field earn him MVP honors and
the game ball. Embarrassed by his earlier outburst, Mr. Griffey apologizes to Frank for acting like such a jerk. Ellen thanks
Matt for being such a good friend. After notifying his father that they'll be going nose to nose in the malpractice suit, Scotty
invites Rhonda to come back to work for him.

Thursday, August 28, 1997 (Episode #64)
Kevin explains to his father how the discovery of a chemical imbalance may make it possible for him to receive a new course of treatment which could lead to a full recovery. Worried about retaliation from her demented uncle, Danielle begs Jake not to
leave town without Rex's permission. At the lighthouse, Lucy informs a startled Rex that Scotty will be representing Jax
Cosmetics as it expands into the European markets. Recovering quickly from the unpleasant surprise, Rex assures Lucy he
looks forward to working with his late niece's husband. Overruling Danielle's objections, Jake angrily reminds her that he won't
let anyone stand in the way of his plan to save his parents from prosecution or deportation. Kevin asks a skeptical Victor to
join him in psychotherapy in a belated effort to heal what's left of their troubled family. Ellen advises Jake not to risk incurring
Dr. Boardman's wrath by taking time off just as he's scheduled to begin his surgical rotation. Scott tells Rex he'll need to take a
look at all the paperwork involving his business dealings with the cosmetic firm both in the States and abroad. Later, Rex
terrifies Danielle by hinting that her boyfriend could fall victim to a highly lethal poison if he attempts to leave Port Charles.

Friday, August 29, 1997 (Episode #65)
Exhausted by their rough day with Dr. Boardman, the weary interns congregate in the on-call room to discuss their plans for the weekend. Although Kevin theorizes that Jake's family problems may be the sole reason for Danielle's gloom, Scotty angrily insists that the young doctor and his actress girlfriend are up to their eyeballs in the plot to kidnap Serena. Meanwhile, Danielle frantically attempts to find Jake before he skips town. Gleefully hinting that the missing physician could be lying in an alley somewhere, gasping for breath, Rex tortures Danielle by waving the poison's antidote in front of her. As Serena nervously prepares for her school orientation, Lucy assures the girl she'll make plenty of new friends once class begins. Chortling to Eve about his success in sucking up to Boardman, Chris reveals that he's been invited to join the chief surgical resident on his next fishing trip. Later, at the Recovery Room, Chris and Eve watch Frank and Julie meet for the beginning of their big night together. Joe offers Karen a sympathetic ear as she mentally reviews her painful run-in with Dr. Boardman. Recalling the plot of her favorite Alfred Hitchcock movie, Lucy speculates that Rex may have created a phony paper trail to cover the fact that he never left Port Charles during the kidnapping.
